Meniere's

Meniere ’s Disease and Hearing Loss

Grandpa with grandsonMeniere’s disease results from an abnormality in the fluids of the inner ear, causing vertigo (dizziness) in varying degrees. Tinnitis and hearing loss are two of the symptoms of Meniere’s disease.

It is recommended that regular audiometric examinations (hearing tests) be taken in order to monitor the status of hearing of the patient. Meniere’s sufferers often lose abilities around discriminating speech, and again, a hearing test can help to isolate the problem.

A patient with Meniere’s disease does not need the added stress of hearing loss! Since hearing loss can be disorienting in itself, correcting a hearing problem as soon as possible can only be of benefit. There are many, many options when it comes to choosing a hearing device, in terms of fitting the device within the ear canal or behind the ear, and whether or not the volume should be manually or automatically adjusted, as well as many other considerations that can be reviewed with a specialist.

Not all Meniere’s patients experience hearing loss, but because it is one of the symptoms presenting in Meniere’s, hearing should be checked regularly and often. Developing a good ongoing relationship with a hearing specialist who understands your needs is critical to keeping your hearing the best it can be.
